"From other deed records we learn that Nicholas sold lot No.8 and purchased Lot No. 12, a block nearer the square, where he established a business of operating an Inn. In Berkeley County Ordinary License Bond Book No. 1 page 146 dated 27 February 1798 is recorded a license for Nicholas Markwood (sic) to operate an Ordinary at his house. Ist sets forth that he should "provide good wholesome and clean lodging and diet for travelers, stableage, fodder and prvoender or pasturage for thier horses and shall not suffer or permit any unlawful gaming in his house nor on the Sabbath Day suffer any person to tipple or drink more than necessary."
