"The first recorded record I have found is a deed recorded in Berkeley
County, Virginia deed book No 5 page 481 dated 1 May 1780. Hugh Rippy
and Mary, his wife, of Berkeley County sold to Nicholas Markwort,
sic
of said county for 125 pounds, lot number 8
in Martinsburg, was to William Paterson, he to Thomas Phillip, he to Hugh
Rippy. Located on the corner of Queen Street and Race Street.
Map shows the location as the southeast corner."
