The
first record found is a deed recorded in the Berkeley County, Virginia
deed book No. 5 page 481 dated 1 May 1780.
(Hugh Rippy and Mary, his
wife, of Berkeley County sold to Nicholas 'Markwort' (sic), of said county
for 125 pounds, lot number 8 in Martinsburg, was to William Paterson, he
to Thomas Phillip, he to Hugh Rippy. Located on the corner of Queen
Street and Race Street. Map shows the location as the southeast corner.)
Later deed records show Nicholas
'Markwood' sold lot No. 8 and purchased Lot No. 12, a block nearer the
square, where he established a business of operating an Inn. In Berkeley
County Ordinary License Bond Book No. 1 page 146 dated 27 February 1798
is recorded a license for Nicholas Markwood (sic) to operate an Ordinary
at his house. It sets forth he should "provide good wholesome and
clean lodging and diet for travelers, stableage, fodder and prvoender (provender)
or pasturage for their horses and shall not suffer or permit any unlawful
gaming in his house nor on the Sabbath Day suffer any person to tipple
or drink more than necessary."
On the 1850 census, Nicholas'
daughter, Catherine Snider gives her age as 73 and her birth place as Maryland
... placing them in Maryland around 1776-7.
