The following is from a newspaper clipping dated
Thursday Morning, April 17, 1913, in the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette on
page 10.
"MONROEVILLE, Ind., April 16. - We are pleased to
be able to give to the readers of the Journal-Gazette, a short sketch of
the life of an old Allen county pioneer whose death occurred April 8, aged
76 years, 2 months and 15 days.
"Mr. Marquart was one of the oldest and one of the most prominent settlers
of Madison township. At the age of two years his parents (Jonathan
Marquart & Catherine Bashore-Marquart ... my insertion) moved from
Perry county, O., where he was born, Jan. 23, 1837, to a place now known
as the Zollinger farm a few miles south of Fort Wayne, where the family
resided until the subject of this sketch grew to manhood.
In 1847, he with his parents, moved to Madison township,
where in 1861 he answered his country's first call and enlisted in the
30th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. After three years of service, participating
in many hard-fought battles, he returned to Madison township, where he
purchased the farm on which he had resided continuously until death.
In the early days when large game was plentiful,
Mr. Marquart was known as one of the great hunters of the country, having
visited the hunting grounds of Maine and other noted hunting states.
At the age of 71 he joined a hunting party and spent
a portion of the winter in camp in the state of Wisconsin, hunting big
game. As a marksman he had no superior and whenever there was a shooting
range in the neighborhood it was certain that Mr. Marquart attired as above
(picture) together with his faithful rifle would be there.
He was married to Martha A. Clear-Marquart, on June
28, 1866, at Fort Wayne, by Squire Sanders. To this union were born
seven children, five sons and two daughters. One son and one daughter
preceded him in death.
Besides his comrades and many friends there is left
to mourn their loss the widow and five children, who are: Mrs. Emma
Giant, of Maples, I.H. Marquart, a track foreman, of Fort Wayne,
D.S. and Joseph K.L. Marquart, of Madison township, and Oli (?) P. Marquart,
of Monroeville. The last two named are rural route carriers out of
this place. There is also a step-son, Scott Marquart, an employee
of the Pennsylvania at this place. The funeral services were held
Thursday, April 10 at the U.B. church in this city, Rev. E. H. Ballou officiating.
Interment in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
In September 1870, he united with the German Baptist
church and was a faithful member to the last, serving several years as
a deacon."

This is the head stone on the grave of Isaac I. Marquart
in the Monroeville Memorial Cemetery, Monroeville, Indiana, *family
history states that Isaac cut and carved this head stone himself.*
As often is the case with oral family histories,
something comes along to indicate or prove 'it ain't necessarily so'
... this has proven true in this case. Isaac sketched the idea
for this head stone but a monument company did the actual carving.
I will include a link to the sketch and information about the company and
price of the stone in the near future. Our thanks go out to Rosemary
Marquart-Dager for this new information.
